Posts Viewable to Zone Members Only

I know we have discussed the ability to delete, or at least to edit, our own posts, and for whatever reason, the administrators still haven't caught up with the times and refuse to implement this feature. But what about at least making posts viewable to zone members only? I do realise that this is the internet, but most sites don't make their content available to search engines, and sometimes, we may discuss things that we don't wish nonmembers to see. Yes, we could always use another site, like Facebook. But this is a site specifically for the blind, where we can discuss things which most sighted people wouldn't understand, and most of all, a sight which is fully accessible to us. So why should we lack features which are pretty much standard across all other social networking sites?

I'm pretty sure this topic has been brought up as well. There are benefits to having board posts viewable to the public. it can actually help people find the zone via search engines who otherwise might not be aware of it. It can also help people find other potentially useful information on blindness related topics who might not want to join the zone to log in. Honestly, I've found a lot of useful information this way; not on the Zone's forems, but others that also have their posts viewable to anyone.

By the way, don't forget that graffiti posts are only viewable to users who are logged in. if you're really worried about the public seeing a private post of yours, I would post there instead if you can. Even so, there's really nothing stopping a user from copying a post, and reposting it somewhere else that will be public, like twitter, facebook or a blog, so nothing is ever guaranteed.

Even if the staff were to implament this feature, all posts thus far would still most likely be searchable to the public. it does take awhile for search engines to clear that information sometimes.

Jess said it perfectly.

This is primarily a sight with people, most of which, are blind. However, it is impossible and false to say that no one who has an account with this site has sight. I agree with OceanDream. How else can we educate other people about blindness and how we do what we do? This is one of many ways.

Still, most of the people here are blind. I just think that we should be entitled to the same features as on many other mainstream sites. There are educational sites for the blind, and if it's really about that, then perhaps there can be a public category where we specifically discuss blind issues.

I would definatly oppose to this idea. Not all on this site can be Premium like myself, it's not fair to put even such a suggestion. I think this site is perfect the way it is but could make some adjustments in the future.

Alex, I don't think this has anything to do with being premium or not.

Tiffanitsa, many mainstream sites also have public forems, where anyone can read, but only members can post. the zone is far from the only one. I, for one, have found some very useful information on such forems, and would be disappointed if their staff were to make posts viewable to members only. Now, I realize I'm not everybody, but my points from earlier still stand. Graffiti is for members only, and even if all posts were restricted, privacy is *never* a guarantee on the internet. Copying and pasting is something just about anyone can do, and they don't need your permission.

My view is if you don't want it seen don't post it. Even chatting with someone privately unless you know there not saving what you say, or trust them you are online, so. This is the issue many people get involved in with other sites. They post the most private stuff, than are amazed when its not private at all. Private investagators love hunan nature.

I agree with others on here. Yes, this has been suggested to the staff several times before if I remember correctly. and, each and every time the answer was no. So, I wouldn't count on it being done.

I have also found things on forums that were biewable to anybody.
the truth the best thing to possibly do is dont put your name etc out there.
For me its way too late for that.
once its there, it'll probably be there forever.
think about the way back archives.
so even if a site that had your name out there died, and someone didn't copy and paste, there's still ways.

I guess you have to accept the fact that if you choose to put any personal information about yourself on the Internet, whether it's your name or just things that have happened to you, someone who's determined enough could find those things and use them against you. I've certainly said things on the internet over the years that make me wince looking back on them, but the way I see it now, it's my own fault so I'm a bad person. I chose to say everything I said. No one held a gun to my head to force me to say anything, so if anyone ever comes across posts I made and hates me for them, or views me as unprofessional, I have no one to blame but myself.

honestly, i didn't think it was any big deal.
but then again with Facebook, twiddor, and all kinds of other stuff.... its not hard to do that.

it's amazing how much someone with the right tools can find out about you, even if you've taken typical measures to keep it private.
